چکیده

The ‘habitat heterogeneity hypothesis’ is one of the cornerstones of ecology (e.g. Simpson, 1949; MacArthur & Wilson, 1967; Lack, 1969). It assumes that structurally complex habitats may provide more niches and diverse ways of exploiting the environmental resources and thus increase species diversity (Bazzaz, 1975). In most habitats, plant communities determine the physical structure of the environment, and therefore, have a considerable influence on the distributions and interactions of animal species (reviews in Lawton, 1983; McCoy & Bell, 1991). For example, for bird species diversity in forests, MacArthur & MacArthur (1961) evidenced that the physical structure of a plant community, i.e. how the foliage is distributed vertically, may be more important than the actual composition of plant species. Although positive relationships between vegetation-shaped habitat heterogeneity and animal species diversity are well documented on both local and regional scales (Davidowitz & Rosenzweig, 1998), empirical and theoretical studies have yielded contradictory results. Food plant diversity as broad-scale determinant of avian frugivore richness.

The causes of variation in animal species richness at large spatial scales are intensively debated. Here, we examine whether the diversity of food plants, contemporary climate and energy, or habitat heterogeneity determine species richness patterns of avian frugivores across sub-Saharan Africa. Path models indicate that species richness of Ficus (their fruits being one of the major food resourc...

Investigation of woody species diversity in relation to physiographic factors (Case study; Yew habitat of Kalaleh-Arasbaran)

Physiographic factors, due to their special role in determining some climatic and edaphic parameters, always influence the diversity and richness of plant species. Due to the importance of Arasbaran vegetation area, the present study was conducted to investigate the biodiversity of woody species of Kalaleh yew habitat in relation to physiographic factors. For this purpose, 62 plots of 4 square ...

ارزیابی اثربخشی مناطق حفاظت‌شدۀ استان اصفهان در کاهش اثرات خشکسالی و مداخلات انسانی

Habitat heterogeneity plays an important role in increasing species diversity. Heterogeneity of habitats and protected areas can increase the ability of species to adapt to climate change. It is expected that appropriate heterogeneity is necessary for sustainability of protected areas. The influence of altitude on parameters such as temperature and precipitation and the role of microclimates in...

Species diversity of fish in the Sanandaj Azad Dam ecosystem

Fish sampling was conducted to evaluate the species diversity of fish in 4 stations in Sanandaj Azad dam ecosystem seasonally from summer of 2017 to spring of 2018. A total of 1057 fish were caught in 12 species, of which more than 80% were caught in the lake behind the dam. The Cyprinidae family had 11 species with the most species diversity and only Sasanidus kermanshahensis belonged to the N...

Beech cupules as keystone structures for soil fauna

Facilitative or positive interactions are ubiquitous in nature and play a fundamental role in the configuration of ecological communities. In particular, habitat modification and niche construction, in which one organism locally modifies abiotic conditions and favours other organisms by buffering the effects of adverse environmental factors, are among the most relevant facilitative interactions...
